Chrétien de Troyes

Who is the author of a legend? No single person. Over the years, many people add to an initial story, which is based on fact.

Although we think of King Arthur today as a British legend, stories of Arthur came from all over Europe. Chrétien de Troyes wrote about him in French, adding the castle of Camelot, the knight Lancelot, and the Holy Grail to the legend.

Chrétien came from the town of Troyes, on the Seine, South-East of Paris. He lived from about 1135 to about 1190. He wrote his stories as rhyming poems which were sung to music.
