Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was an English writer who criticized the wrongs in society. At the age of 12, he began work in a factory, after his father went to prison for debt. He worked as a journalist before becoming a novelist. In later life, he travelled around Britain, Ireland and America, giving public readings from his novels.

Oscar Wilde thought Dickens was a sentimental writer. He said that, when he read a sad scene in one of Dickens’s novels where a young girl dies, he had tears in his eyes – tears of laughter – because the writing was so bad!
